Narrative:

We were on a vector for right traffic (downwind) landing on runway 35R at den. Prevailing conditions were VMC, visibility greater than 10 mi, and ground contact was maintained at all times. During this time we were issued several altitude changes and speed reductions. On our downwind, leveled at 7000 ft, configured at 170 KTS. The controller requested to verify our altitude. Shortly thereafter, he requested an immediate climb to 9000 ft and issued a turn to base, then final to join the runway 35R localizer. We proceeded to the field with a normal landing. All 3 flight crew members were alert and involved. No one noted any discrepancies. All 3 flight crew members are still unaware of how or where any miscoms could have introduced themselves.
