Narrative:

Altitude deviation. During departure on the whitestone climb, departure cleared us to go direct to eliot and climb to 15000 ft. The next controller told us to turn to a heading of 270 degrees and maintain 250 KTS. The first officer read back maintain 250 KTS and climb to FL270. No ATC acknowledgement was received. Passing about 16000 ft we requested an altitude clarification. ATC said we had should be at 15000 ft but go ahead and continue climb to 17000 ft. Nothing further was said.
