Narrative:

After being cleared to taxi to departure end of runway 22R at taxiway west for takeoff (and while en route) we were advised by lead flight attendant that there was a burnt rubber smell in cabin. I requested permission to pull off into the run-up area (there was no other traffic) to allow the so to investigate the odor. Ground control said that rather than pull off to the left we were cleared to turn right on taxiway M and cross runway 22R. He then immediately changed the clearance to proceed straight ahead, cross runway 11/29 and turn right onto taxiway Z. We understood that we were to cross runway 22R at taxiway Z rather than taxiway M. We were also anxious to get the aircraft stopped so that we could investigate the odor. We are now unsure of the exact clearance we received from ground control. I don't believe the first officer read back any hold short instruction which would be required if one were issued.

Title: DC10 CREW HAD BURNING RUBBER ODOR IN CABIN. THEY MAY HAVE HAD RWY INCURSION DURING TAXI CONFUSION.

Narrative: AFTER BEING CLRED TO TAXI TO DEP END OF RWY 22R AT TXWY W FOR TKOF (AND WHILE ENRTE) WE WERE ADVISED BY LEAD FLT ATTENDANT THAT THERE WAS A BURNT RUBBER SMELL IN CABIN. I REQUESTED PERMISSION TO PULL OFF INTO THE RUN-UP AREA (THERE WAS NO OTHER TFC) TO ALLOW THE SO TO INVESTIGATE THE ODOR. GND CTL SAID THAT RATHER THAN PULL OFF TO THE L WE WERE CLRED TO TURN R ON TXWY M AND CROSS RWY 22R. HE THEN IMMEDIATELY CHANGED THE CLRNC TO PROCEED STRAIGHT AHEAD, CROSS RWY 11/29 AND TURN R ONTO TXWY Z. WE UNDERSTOOD THAT WE WERE TO CROSS RWY 22R AT TXWY Z RATHER THAN TXWY M. WE WERE ALSO ANXIOUS TO GET THE ACFT STOPPED SO THAT WE COULD INVESTIGATE THE ODOR. WE ARE NOW UNSURE OF THE EXACT CLRNC WE RECEIVED FROM GND CTL. I DON'T BELIEVE THE FO READ BACK ANY HOLD SHORT INSTRUCTION WHICH WOULD BE REQUIRED IF ONE WERE ISSUED.
