Narrative:

I am a line check airman and was giving a new captain operating experience on flight to cvg. New captain flying and flight was level at 9000 ft, being vectored for approach to runway 36R at cvg. Approach controller then assigned a heading change and new runway (runway 36L) approach chart and answering the clearance, new captain turned to the heading and descended 200 ft from altitude in the turn. No conflicts, no 'mention' by ATC, and return to assigned altitude of 9000 ft was immediate.
