Narrative:

I had just assumed the falmouth high radar sector. At the exact moment that the relief briefing ended, the sector south of me requested aircraft #1 descending from FL310 to FL280. Without scanning for traffic, I complied with the request. I then sat down and proceeded to adjust the sector environment to my personal preferences. Conflict alert brought my attention back to the scope. Aircraft #1 was through FL303 for FL280 with aircraft #2 opposite direction at FL290. Using turns, I unsuccessfully tried to re-establish standard separation. In my opinion, the primary cause of the error was my misplaced priorities. I was adjusting the sector and trying to comply with the next sector's request instead of scanning and talking mental 'ownership' of the aircraft in my sector. I plan to change my work habits for the first 5-10 mins of a session so that this will not reoccur.

Title: ZID CTLR APPROVES DSCNT CLRNC TO ANOTHER ZID CTLR WITHOUT FIRST SCANNING FOR TFC AND BECOMES INVOLVED IN AN OPERROR.

Narrative: I HAD JUST ASSUMED THE FALMOUTH HIGH RADAR SECTOR. AT THE EXACT MOMENT THAT THE RELIEF BRIEFING ENDED, THE SECTOR S OF ME REQUESTED ACFT #1 DSNDING FROM FL310 TO FL280. WITHOUT SCANNING FOR TFC, I COMPLIED WITH THE REQUEST. I THEN SAT DOWN AND PROCEEDED TO ADJUST THE SECTOR ENVIRONMENT TO MY PERSONAL PREFERENCES. CONFLICT ALERT BROUGHT MY ATTN BACK TO THE SCOPE. ACFT #1 WAS THROUGH FL303 FOR FL280 WITH ACFT #2 OPPOSITE DIRECTION AT FL290. USING TURNS, I UNSUCCESSFULLY TRIED TO RE-ESTABLISH STANDARD SEPARATION. IN MY OPINION, THE PRIMARY CAUSE OF THE ERROR WAS MY MISPLACED PRIORITIES. I WAS ADJUSTING THE SECTOR AND TRYING TO COMPLY WITH THE NEXT SECTOR'S REQUEST INSTEAD OF SCANNING AND TALKING MENTAL 'OWNERSHIP' OF THE ACFT IN MY SECTOR. I PLAN TO CHANGE MY WORK HABITS FOR THE FIRST 5-10 MINS OF A SESSION SO THAT THIS WILL NOT REOCCUR.
