Narrative:

After leveloff at FL330 the oil temperature on the left engine started to climb into the yellow band and the fuel temperature also increased well above that of the right engine. We went to our cockpit operating manual and increased power as instructed to reduce the oil temperature. Temperature started to decrease below the yellow band then started back up. Started timing as temperature went back into yellow band. Notified lead flight attendant of yellow emergency due to precautionary engine shut down, talked to passenger and informed them of engine shut down, tried to contact dispatch, no joy. Tried to talk to bwi, but no one was in operations to relay to dispatch or communicate with company. Declared an emergency with ATC and tower due to precautionary engine shut down. At end of 15 min shutdown engine as per company procedure. Asked for radar vectors to visual/ILS runway 33L at bwi. ATC asked if we saw the field. We said yes, but wanted vectors to ILS final. Tower cleared us for visual to runway 33L. We maneuvered toward the runway at that point tower asked if we saw the field because we appeared too far left to do the approach. We again asked for vectors to the final in order to alleviate any conflicts and to make sure we had the proper runway. We then received vectors toward the airfield and again were asked if the field was in sight. We said yes, but still wanted the vectors in order to stay with the radar environment. Tower again cleared us for the visual. We maneuvered to the final and an uneventful landing was made. After landing we had the rescue personnel check the aircraft over. Then talked to passenger and advised them that everything was ok. Taxi to gate was uneventful and deboarding was uneventful. Handling by approach and tower could have been better. When we requested vectors to an ILS final, even though we were totally in VFR conditions, we were asking to eliminate one phase of flight that could have caused us problems: other aircraft/airport position/runway. Approach/tower seemed adamant about turning us loose for a VFR approach. If I had it to do over again I would have demanded and not accepted the do you see the airport, go for it type clearance.

Title: FLC OF AN MLG SHUT DOWN THE L ENG AFTER LEVELOFF DUE TO HIGH OIL PRESSURE AND DECLARED AN EMER TO THE NEAREST VFR ARPT.

Narrative: AFTER LEVELOFF AT FL330 THE OIL TEMP ON THE L ENG STARTED TO CLB INTO THE YELLOW BAND AND THE FUEL TEMP ALSO INCREASED WELL ABOVE THAT OF THE R ENG. WE WENT TO OUR COCKPIT OPERATING MANUAL AND INCREASED PWR AS INSTRUCTED TO REDUCE THE OIL TEMP. TEMP STARTED TO DECREASE BELOW THE YELLOW BAND THEN STARTED BACK UP. STARTED TIMING AS TEMP WENT BACK INTO YELLOW BAND. NOTIFIED LEAD FLT ATTENDANT OF YELLOW EMER DUE TO PRECAUTIONARY ENG SHUT DOWN, TALKED TO PAX AND INFORMED THEM OF ENG SHUT DOWN, TRIED TO CONTACT DISPATCH, NO JOY. TRIED TO TALK TO BWI, BUT NO ONE WAS IN OPS TO RELAY TO DISPATCH OR COMMUNICATE WITH COMPANY. DECLARED AN EMER WITH ATC AND TWR DUE TO PRECAUTIONARY ENG SHUT DOWN. AT END OF 15 MIN SHUTDOWN ENG AS PER COMPANY PROC. ASKED FOR RADAR VECTORS TO VISUAL/ILS RWY 33L AT BWI. ATC ASKED IF WE SAW THE FIELD. WE SAID YES, BUT WANTED VECTORS TO ILS FINAL. TWR CLRED US FOR VISUAL TO RWY 33L. WE MANEUVERED TOWARD THE RWY AT THAT POINT TWR ASKED IF WE SAW THE FIELD BECAUSE WE APPEARED TOO FAR L TO DO THE APCH. WE AGAIN ASKED FOR VECTORS TO THE FINAL IN ORDER TO ALLEVIATE ANY CONFLICTS AND TO MAKE SURE WE HAD THE PROPER RWY. WE THEN RECEIVED VECTORS TOWARD THE AIRFIELD AND AGAIN WERE ASKED IF THE FIELD WAS IN SIGHT. WE SAID YES, BUT STILL WANTED THE VECTORS IN ORDER TO STAY WITH THE RADAR ENVIRONMENT. TWR AGAIN CLRED US FOR THE VISUAL. WE MANEUVERED TO THE FINAL AND AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG WAS MADE. AFTER LNDG WE HAD THE RESCUE PERSONNEL CHK THE ACFT OVER. THEN TALKED TO PAX AND ADVISED THEM THAT EVERYTHING WAS OK. TAXI TO GATE WAS UNEVENTFUL AND DEBOARDING WAS UNEVENTFUL. HANDLING BY APCH AND TWR COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER. WHEN WE REQUESTED VECTORS TO AN ILS FINAL, EVEN THOUGH WE WERE TOTALLY IN VFR CONDITIONS, WE WERE ASKING TO ELIMINATE ONE PHASE OF FLT THAT COULD HAVE CAUSED US PROBS: OTHER ACFT/ARPT POS/RWY. APCH/TWR SEEMED ADAMANT ABOUT TURNING US LOOSE FOR A VFR APCH. IF I HAD IT TO DO OVER AGAIN I WOULD HAVE DEMANDED AND NOT ACCEPTED THE DO YOU SEE THE ARPT, GO FOR IT TYPE CLRNC.
