Narrative:

Climbing out from sua, we were cleared to 9000 ft. The autoplt and altitude select were on and I believe were properly set. The autoplt failed to capture and we overshot the altitude by approximately 500 ft before we could stop the climb. I believe either I or the copilot inadvertently hit the trim button on the yoke and disconnected the altitude select mode. Lesson learned: don't blindly assume the autoplt will work! We get complacent and too confident in our automatic system. There is no substitute for good old basic flying techniques.

I BELIEVE EITHER I OR THE COPLT INADVERTENTLY HIT THE TRIM BUTTON ON THE YOKE AND DISCONNECTED THE ALT SELECT MODE. LESSON LEARNED: DON'T BLINDLY ASSUME THE AUTOPLT WILL WORK!
