Narrative:

While climbing to assigned altitude of 10000 ft MSL by ATC, the autoplt didn't capture the altitude. I stopped the aircraft's climb by approximately 10300 ft and returned to 10000 ft MSL. The altitude preselect had been set accidentally to 1000 ft instead of 10000 ft. The preselect only shows altitude in 100's of ft and, at a quick look, it's mistakenly read as 10000 ft instead of 1000 ft. It could be corrected by looking closer and adding more 0's to display actual altitude selected.

Title: A CPR C551 PLT RPTED THAT HE MISSET THE ALT PRESELECT WHICH CAUSED HIM TO OVERSHOOT HIS ALT AT AGS, GA.

Narrative: WHILE CLBING TO ASSIGNED ALT OF 10000 FT MSL BY ATC, THE AUTOPLT DIDN'T CAPTURE THE ALT. I STOPPED THE ACFT'S CLB BY APPROX 10300 FT AND RETURNED TO 10000 FT MSL. THE ALT PRESELECT HAD BEEN SET ACCIDENTALLY TO 1000 FT INSTEAD OF 10000 FT. THE PRESELECT ONLY SHOWS ALT IN 100'S OF FT AND, AT A QUICK LOOK, IT'S MISTAKENLY READ AS 10000 FT INSTEAD OF 1000 FT. IT COULD BE CORRECTED BY LOOKING CLOSER AND ADDING MORE 0'S TO DISPLAY ACTUAL ALT SELECTED.
