Narrative:

#3 cabin smoke detector illuminated and warning bell sounded. Put on oxygen masks and smoke goggles. Performed 'smoke and fumes' elimination emergency checklist. Flight engineer visually reported smoke in main cabin. Declared emergency with ZJX. Proceeded to rdu. Maintained 350 KTS till 4000 ft. Flew ILS runway 5L approach into rdu. Stopped aircraft on runway and exited out main cabin slide. No smoke or fire present during evacuate/evacuation. Decision making and communication difficult due to lack of visibility using the goggles and captain used overhead speaker instead of putting his headset on over the oxygen mask. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter said source of smoke has not been determined. Detectors checked out ok.
