Narrative:

On vectors from approach control we were given descent clearance to 5500 ft. Came out of 8000 ft and were told to abide by SID altitudes of 8000 ft or above till crossing sls VOR -- descent was stopped at 6000 ft. Approach said maintain 6000 ft and fly the approach. We must be sure of altitude clearance even when on vectors -- always confirm.
