Narrative:

I was hand flying the aircraft to an intermediate altitude of 8000 ft MSL during initial climb/departure. I allowed the aircraft to reach approximately 8400 ft MSL. I had diverted my attention momentarily to my navigation charts to confirm radials, frequencys, etc, of the course we were going to eventually join en route to dtw. My attention was brought back to the altitude with the 'tone' on the altitude alerter. I immediately began a leveloff and recovery back to 8000 ft MSL.
