Narrative:

Climbing out of bur on departure vectors, our #1 engine oil temperature climbed into the yellow caution range. Our emergency procedures directed us to shut down the engine after 15 mins in the caution range. We advised our company and diverted into lax because it was nearby, no high terrain on the approach and departure paths, the WX for runway 25L was good and I am very familiar with lax. An emergency was declared. We requested emergency equipment standing by. Our landing and taxi in was uneventful. I think that we did everything by the book. We followed our aircraft procedures and fom. ZLA and socal approach were superb. They were very accommodating for us considering that it was rush hour in lax. Our simulator training really paid off. This was my first engine shutdown in 20 yrs of flying and it felt like I had done it a thousand times before! Supplemental information from acn 465877: on climb from bur, so announced a problem with fuel heat valve stuck open on engine #1. Oil temperature started to rise on #1 and would not come down.
