Narrative:

While taxiing to depart runway 35L, at intersection of txwys K and east I stopped to orient myself. Ground advised he was 'holding traffic for you, I need you to move.' I asked 'should I continue straight ahead.' he replied, 'take a right, then a left.' I turned right onto taxiway east, then left onto what turned out to be runway 35R. Ground advised 'you have wandered onto an active runway, expedite to the nearest taxiway and exit' -- which I did, onto taxiway G and F. I completed the departure without further incident. I did not do a thorough job of understanding the airport txwys (even though I had proper documents), before I began to taxi. The controller did a less than adequate job of directing me to the correct taxiway. This occurred at david wayne hooks municipal, houston, tx, dwh.
