Narrative:

Over ric, cleared to cross 10 mi south of ojaay at 10000 ft. At about 30 DME on 018 degree radial from ric descending through approximately 11200 ft, I called 11000 ft for 10000 ft (the first officer was flying). At that time ZDC switched us to dca approach control. After resetting my communication panel (PA back to communication) and switching to dca approach, I checked our position and altitude. We were ric 35 DME and I thought 10000 ft. However, I had misread the altitude -- it was 10995 ft. We had leveled at 11000 ft. By the time there was a break to check in with approach, we were ric 40 DME. I initially checked in at 10000 ft and then in the same transmission corrected it to out of 11000 ft for 10000 ft. We made it to 10000 ft about 4 DME late. It was a very busy time of flight. In the future I will pay more attention in backing up the other pilot while distraction by other duties.

Title: A DSNDING B727 CROSSES THE 38 DME OF RIC 1000 FT ABOVE ITS ASSIGNED XING ALT, RIC, VA.

Narrative: OVER RIC, CLRED TO CROSS 10 MI S OF OJAAY AT 10000 FT. AT ABOUT 30 DME ON 018 DEG RADIAL FROM RIC DSNDING THROUGH APPROX 11200 FT, I CALLED 11000 FT FOR 10000 FT (THE FO WAS FLYING). AT THAT TIME ZDC SWITCHED US TO DCA APCH CTL. AFTER RESETTING MY COM PANEL (PA BACK TO COM) AND SWITCHING TO DCA APCH, I CHKED OUR POS AND ALT. WE WERE RIC 35 DME AND I THOUGHT 10000 FT. HOWEVER, I HAD MISREAD THE ALT -- IT WAS 10995 FT. WE HAD LEVELED AT 11000 FT. BY THE TIME THERE WAS A BREAK TO CHK IN WITH APCH, WE WERE RIC 40 DME. I INITIALLY CHKED IN AT 10000 FT AND THEN IN THE SAME XMISSION CORRECTED IT TO OUT OF 11000 FT FOR 10000 FT. WE MADE IT TO 10000 FT ABOUT 4 DME LATE. IT WAS A VERY BUSY TIME OF FLT. IN THE FUTURE I WILL PAY MORE ATTN IN BACKING UP THE OTHER PLT WHILE DISTR BY OTHER DUTIES.
