Narrative:

During pushback the #1 engine failed to start normally. 'No egt' start abnormal checklist was run and it was found that the engine start switch was not in 'ground start.' after the engine was motored as per the QRH, the RPM went to 0% and the egt remained at 0 degrees C. Crew then proceeded to start #2 engine. During the last part of starting #2 engine we were informed of smoke coming from #1 engine. Safety equipment was called along with maintenance. #1 engine parameters indicated 'O' RPM and 500 degrees C egt. The 'hot start' checklist was called for as per the QRH. As the engine was motored to 20% RPM the 'egt' started to increase further. The fire handle to #1 engine was pulled. This action started the egt to decrease. All appropriate start abnormal checklists were completed along with engine shutdown and parking procedures using the normal checklist. The abnormal engine start was written up in the aircraft log.

Narrative: DURING PUSHBACK THE #1 ENG FAILED TO START NORMALLY. 'NO EGT' START ABNORMAL CHKLIST WAS RUN AND IT WAS FOUND THAT THE ENG START SWITCH WAS NOT IN 'GND START.' AFTER THE ENG WAS MOTORED AS PER THE QRH, THE RPM WENT TO 0% AND THE EGT REMAINED AT 0 DEGS C. CREW THEN PROCEEDED TO START #2 ENG. DURING THE LAST PART OF STARTING #2 ENG WE WERE INFORMED OF SMOKE COMING FROM #1 ENG. SAFETY EQUIP WAS CALLED ALONG WITH MAINT. #1 ENG PARAMETERS INDICATED 'O' RPM AND 500 DEGS C EGT. THE 'HOT START' CHKLIST WAS CALLED FOR AS PER THE QRH. AS THE ENG WAS MOTORED TO 20% RPM THE 'EGT' STARTED TO INCREASE FURTHER. THE FIRE HANDLE TO #1 ENG WAS PULLED. THIS ACTION STARTED THE EGT TO DECREASE. ALL APPROPRIATE START ABNORMAL CHKLISTS WERE COMPLETED ALONG WITH ENG SHUTDOWN AND PARKING PROCS USING THE NORMAL CHKLIST.
