Narrative:

ZID issued a climb from FL350 to FL370. As I commenced the climb and pushed the power levers to maximum continuous thrust, the overspd warning went off. The autoplt had control of the aircraft and initiated a climb in excess of 5000 FPM. Passing through FL360 at this time, I realized that we were not going to level off at FL370. I disconnected the autoplt and began to descend back to FL370. We had overshot by about 700 ft. I was unable to arrest the descent in time in part due to passenger up and moving about the cabin -- any extreme control inputs would have jeopardized their safety. I realize an autoplt malfunction is not an excuse to miss an assigned altitude. As the PF, it is my responsibility to monitor and control the autoplt and recognize potential problems before they develop into a situation where extreme maneuvers might be necessary. In the future, I will be more diligent in my monitoring of the autoplt. It is easy to get complacent in today's modern cockpits.

Title: LR45 FLC OVERSHOT THEIR ASSIGNED ALT.

Narrative: ZID ISSUED A CLB FROM FL350 TO FL370. AS I COMMENCED THE CLB AND PUSHED THE PWR LEVERS TO MAX CONTINUOUS THRUST, THE OVERSPD WARNING WENT OFF. THE AUTOPLT HAD CTL OF THE ACFT AND INITIATED A CLB IN EXCESS OF 5000 FPM. PASSING THROUGH FL360 AT THIS TIME, I REALIZED THAT WE WERE NOT GOING TO LEVEL OFF AT FL370. I DISCONNECTED THE AUTOPLT AND BEGAN TO DSND BACK TO FL370. WE HAD OVERSHOT BY ABOUT 700 FT. I WAS UNABLE TO ARREST THE DSCNT IN TIME IN PART DUE TO PAX UP AND MOVING ABOUT THE CABIN -- ANY EXTREME CTL INPUTS WOULD HAVE JEOPARDIZED THEIR SAFETY. I REALIZE AN AUTOPLT MALFUNCTION IS NOT AN EXCUSE TO MISS AN ASSIGNED ALT. AS THE PF, IT IS MY RESPONSIBILITY TO MONITOR AND CTL THE AUTOPLT AND RECOGNIZE POTENTIAL PROBS BEFORE THEY DEVELOP INTO A SIT WHERE EXTREME MANEUVERS MIGHT BE NECESSARY. IN THE FUTURE, I WILL BE MORE DILIGENT IN MY MONITORING OF THE AUTOPLT. IT IS EASY TO GET COMPLACENT IN TODAY'S MODERN COCKPITS.
