Narrative:

Departed lax en route sjc. Copilot hand flying. Clearance to FL190. Going through FL180, I called 1000 ft to go. Rate of climb was approximately 4000 FPM. I called for the copilot to start leveling off and he engaged the autoplt. The autoplt was unable to capture the altitude and as we passed through FL190. I had him disengage the autoplt and leveled the aircraft manually. We leveled off at 300 ft above the clearance altitude and then descended back to FL190. There was no response from the controller.
