Narrative:

I called approach and notified them I had a photo site just inside the 5 mi airspace boundary. After receiving the squawk, the controller asked exactly where the site was. I informed him it was about 1/2 mi on my 12 O'clock position, and he called traffic on final and gave me a heading away from my site, and I complied. When I passed behind the traffic, I turned back on course to my site without notifying control since I was just about at my site. I realized my mistake when the controller pointed out that he had assigned me a different heading from my position. Even though I was at my site, I should have notified control that I was at that location, and should not have assumed it was ok to proceed after the traffic passed without first notifying control I was where I needed to be and asking if it was ok to proceed with the photos.

Title: PLT OF A PIPER PA28 ON A PHOTO SHOOT TURNED BACK TO HIS INTENDED PHOTO LOCATION WITHOUT CLRNC, AFTER BEING VECTORED BY APCH CTLR FOR TFC SEPARATION.

Narrative: I CALLED APCH AND NOTIFIED THEM I HAD A PHOTO SITE JUST INSIDE THE 5 MI AIRSPACE BOUNDARY. AFTER RECEIVING THE SQUAWK, THE CTLR ASKED EXACTLY WHERE THE SITE WAS. I INFORMED HIM IT WAS ABOUT 1/2 MI ON MY 12 O'CLOCK POS, AND HE CALLED TFC ON FINAL AND GAVE ME A HDG AWAY FROM MY SITE, AND I COMPLIED. WHEN I PASSED BEHIND THE TFC, I TURNED BACK ON COURSE TO MY SITE WITHOUT NOTIFYING CTL SINCE I WAS JUST ABOUT AT MY SITE. I REALIZED MY MISTAKE WHEN THE CTLR POINTED OUT THAT HE HAD ASSIGNED ME A DIFFERENT HDG FROM MY POS. EVEN THOUGH I WAS AT MY SITE, I SHOULD HAVE NOTIFIED CTL THAT I WAS AT THAT LOCATION, AND SHOULD NOT HAVE ASSUMED IT WAS OK TO PROCEED AFTER THE TFC PASSED WITHOUT FIRST NOTIFYING CTL I WAS WHERE I NEEDED TO BE AND ASKING IF IT WAS OK TO PROCEED WITH THE PHOTOS.
