Narrative:

While I was out of the cockpit during a lavatory break, the first officer was given a crossing restr to cross 30 NM southwest of raalf at FL240. The first officer took the aircraft out of VNAV and put the new altitude in the altitude window. At first, there was a short discussion and confusion on the crossing restr when I returned to the cockpit. I then took control of the aircraft and put the new restr in the FMC but did not notice that the VNAV had been disengaged. Once I discovered that the aircraft was not descending, I placed the aircraft on level change and descended rapidly. I relayed to ATC that we were descending but that we may not make the restr. We did make the restr but ATC said they made a couple of calls to the next controller just in case we did not.
