Narrative:
I was breaking in a new copilot who was flying this leg. We were assigned to 'climb and maintain 6000 ft' by new york departure control. The first officer was hand flying. After I saw he was established at 6000 ft, I glanced at my chart for confirmation of routing. When I looked back at the flight instruments we were climbing through 6300 ft. I shoved the yoke forward. A second later, departure control asked us to verify 6000 ft. I did as we were now back there.
