Narrative:

Due to heading being 20 degrees off on HSI on first officer's side (failure) autoplt disconnected on whitestone climb out of lga at 2.5 DME at exact time required to turn left to 040 degrees. Aircraft heading select was armed, no response. Noticed autoplt off light was on. Autothrottles still on. Re-engaged autoplt, re-engaged heading select. Airplane began to turn at 4.3 DME. ATC did not yell, but questioned our heading. Took me 20 seconds to figure out failure and re-engage. Should have clicked off both autoplt and autothrottles and manually flown the immediate left turn. You do not have time to re-engage autoplt/autothrottles with a tight turn in SID.
