Narrative:

Bos ATIS 'traffic landing runway 4L expect to hold short of runway 33R.' initial check in with bos approach 118.25 told to expect runway 4R (full length) then went to bos approach 119.65 and cleared visual approach runway 4L (full length) and then switched to bos tower on a 7-8 NM final runway 4L. At 3-4 NM final runway 4L, bos tower said, cleared to land runway 4L hold short runway 33R. We told him unable hold short. Tower controller asked the reason. We told him we needed more than a 3 mi final for hold short clearance. Tower controller then exclaimed 'did you listen to the ATIS?' we said we had the information but required more warning than short final and refused hold short for taxiing aircraft. If lahso is to be accomplished safely and effectively, I feel approach control needs to issue 'expect hold short' clrncs and information. I feel short final is not the time to brief my first officer of alternate missed approach instructions or special climb out instructions that many of our lahso runways require.

Title: AFTER BEING ADVISED TWICE BY APCH CTL AT BOS TO EXPECT FULL LENGTH RWY, BOS TWR CTLR INSTRUCTS PLT TO HOLD SHORT.

Narrative: BOS ATIS 'TFC LNDG RWY 4L EXPECT TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 33R.' INITIAL CHK IN WITH BOS APCH 118.25 TOLD TO EXPECT RWY 4R (FULL LENGTH) THEN WENT TO BOS APCH 119.65 AND CLRED VISUAL APCH RWY 4L (FULL LENGTH) AND THEN SWITCHED TO BOS TWR ON A 7-8 NM FINAL RWY 4L. AT 3-4 NM FINAL RWY 4L, BOS TWR SAID, CLRED TO LAND RWY 4L HOLD SHORT RWY 33R. WE TOLD HIM UNABLE HOLD SHORT. TWR CTLR ASKED THE REASON. WE TOLD HIM WE NEEDED MORE THAN A 3 MI FINAL FOR HOLD SHORT CLRNC. TWR CTLR THEN EXCLAIMED 'DID YOU LISTEN TO THE ATIS?' WE SAID WE HAD THE INFO BUT REQUIRED MORE WARNING THAN SHORT FINAL AND REFUSED HOLD SHORT FOR TAXIING ACFT.
