Narrative:

Clearing runway 9R, heard taxi clearance of taxiway M5-D to taxiway H-17, which made sense because taxiway D intersects the inner near ramp entry point to taxiway H-17. What controller actually said was taxiway M5- D A-17. I stopped the airplane at taxiway A-16 on taxiway D just short of the inner. Ground control queried me as to why I had gone by taxiway A-17. It was then that I realized I had copied the clearance wrong. A short taxi and requirement for first officer to verify both on the ground call and arrival at ramp left little time to verify one letter difference in taxi clearance.
