Narrative:

On climb out, out of stl, ATC requested immediate acceleration to 320 KTS at approximately 6500 ft MSL. Controller advised us he had authority/authorized to issue such a request due to the airspace we were in. We complied. However, I contacted our dispatch department and they doubt ATC's authority/authorized to issue a waiver of this far. (Waiver of 250 KTS below 10000 ft.)

Title: A B727-200 CAPT WAS ASSIGNED 320 KIAS WHILE HE WAS AT 6500 FT MSL AND SUSPECTED THAT ATC HAD NO AUTH TO MAKE SUCH A WAIVER.

Narrative: ON CLBOUT, OUT OF STL, ATC REQUESTED IMMEDIATE ACCELERATION TO 320 KTS AT APPROX 6500 FT MSL. CTLR ADVISED US HE HAD AUTH TO ISSUE SUCH A REQUEST DUE TO THE AIRSPACE WE WERE IN. WE COMPLIED. HOWEVER, I CONTACTED OUR DISPATCH DEPT AND THEY DOUBT ATC'S AUTH TO ISSUE A WAIVER OF THIS FAR. (WAIVER OF 250 KTS BELOW 10000 FT.)
