Narrative:

During landing roll on runway 31 lga, we heard takeoff clearance given to another aircraft. We were then instructed to exit the runway at taxiway right, which we were not prepared to do. When it became obvious to the controller that we were not clearing at taxiway right, he canceled takeoff clearance issued to rj on runway 4, and I made a greater effort to stop before entering the intersection of runway 4 and runway 13. Subsequent taxi instructions were ambiguous and resulted in delaying our exiting the runway, so ATC had to issue go around instructions to a flight (B727) landing on runway 31. Tower supervisor assured me that the trainee on duty has been debriefed concerning the shortcomings of this procedure -- the expectation of 'hold short' while not issuing lahso clearance restrs.

Title: AN MD80 ON THE ROLLOUT GETS A CLRNC TO EXIT PRIOR TO RWY 4 WHERE A RJ IS ON A TKOF ROLL. MD80 UNABLE, RJ'S TKOF CLRNC CANCELED, ANOTHER LNDG ACFT ON RWY 31 IS SENT AROUND AT LGA, NY.

Narrative: DURING LNDG ROLL ON RWY 31 LGA, WE HEARD TKOF CLRNC GIVEN TO ANOTHER ACFT. WE WERE THEN INSTRUCTED TO EXIT THE RWY AT TXWY R, WHICH WE WERE NOT PREPARED TO DO. WHEN IT BECAME OBVIOUS TO THE CTLR THAT WE WERE NOT CLRING AT TXWY R, HE CANCELED TKOF CLRNC ISSUED TO RJ ON RWY 4, AND I MADE A GREATER EFFORT TO STOP BEFORE ENTERING THE INTXN OF RWY 4 AND RWY 13. SUBSEQUENT TAXI INSTRUCTIONS WERE AMBIGUOUS AND RESULTED IN DELAYING OUR EXITING THE RWY, SO ATC HAD TO ISSUE GAR INSTRUCTIONS TO A FLT (B727) LNDG ON RWY 31. TWR SUPVR ASSURED ME THAT THE TRAINEE ON DUTY HAS BEEN DEBRIEFED CONCERNING THE SHORTCOMINGS OF THIS PROC -- THE EXPECTATION OF 'HOLD SHORT' WHILE NOT ISSUING LAHSO CLRNC RESTRS.
