Narrative:

XA10Z, 126.55, dfw tower, runway 17R. While waiting for takeoff runway 17R, tower reported the wind at 020 degrees at 10 KTS gusting to 16 KTS. This wind was obviously in error since the windsocks for runway 17R were simply limp and twisting. Furthermore, there were no fronts scheduled to go through dfw all day. We configured for a maximum tailwind of 10 KT takeoff and took off without incident. Do we have to accept tower winds as limiting when they are so obvious in error? I have heard that they have had difficulty with an accurate wind reading using the present equipment.

Title: A B767 FLC ELECTED TO TAKE OFF WITH TAILWINDS IN EXCESS OF ACFT OPERATIONAL LIMITS AT DFW.

Narrative: XA10Z, 126.55, DFW TWR, RWY 17R. WHILE WAITING FOR TKOF RWY 17R, TWR RPTED THE WIND AT 020 DEGS AT 10 KTS GUSTING TO 16 KTS. THIS WIND WAS OBVIOUSLY IN ERROR SINCE THE WINDSOCKS FOR RWY 17R WERE SIMPLY LIMP AND TWISTING. FURTHERMORE, THERE WERE NO FRONTS SCHEDULED TO GO THROUGH DFW ALL DAY. WE CONFIGURED FOR A MAX TAILWIND OF 10 KT TKOF AND TOOK OFF WITHOUT INCIDENT. DO WE HAVE TO ACCEPT TWR WINDS AS LIMITING WHEN THEY ARE SO OBVIOUS IN ERROR? I HAVE HEARD THAT THEY HAVE HAD DIFFICULTY WITH AN ACCURATE WIND READING USING THE PRESENT EQUIP.
