Narrative:
The apparent problem arose as I was on my climb/takeoff segment of my flight. The tower cleared me to take off runway 3 with a caution for wake turbulence. I felt it necessary for the safety of myself and my passenger and airplane to side-step to my left to avoid the departing jet's wake turbulence. Tower called on the radio and said I was not cleared for a turn and to fly 030 degrees (or words to that effect). I do not remember hearing ATC instruct me to fly runway heading on takeoff. Tower then informed me to call the tower when I land. I figured I would explain my actions for the side-step action on takeoff then. I am not certain that I violated far 91.130(C)2I and 91.129(G)1, because I was not given specific instructions to fly runway heading. I believe the best way to correct this in the future will be for me to ask tower's permission to move left or right for wake turbulence avoidance before doing so. I feel I was abiding by aim 7-3-8(a) for safety. However, I am submitting this notice of a possible far violation in the event that I, indeed, may have been in the wrong. It is my goal and intention to comply with all FARS for safety reasons. I expect to continue to review the far/aim to be sure I stay in compliance and continue to fly safely.

Title: A LOW TIME TFC WATCH PLT, IN AN ATTEMPT TO AVOID WAKE TURB ON TKOF, SIDE-STEPPED TO THE L. THE CTLR CHASTISED THE PLT SAYING THAT HE HAD NOT AUTH A TURN.
Narrative: THE APPARENT PROB AROSE AS I WAS ON MY CLB/TKOF SEGMENT OF MY FLT. THE TWR CLRED ME TO TAKE OFF RWY 3 WITH A CAUTION FOR WAKE TURB. I FELT IT NECESSARY FOR THE SAFETY OF MYSELF AND MY PAX AND AIRPLANE TO SIDE-STEP TO MY L TO AVOID THE DEPARTING JET'S WAKE TURB. I AM NOT CERTAIN THAT I VIOLATED FAR 91.130(C)2I AND 91.129(G)1, BECAUSE I WAS NOT GIVEN SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS TO FLY RWY HDG. I BELIEVE THE BEST WAY TO CORRECT THIS IN THE FUTURE WILL BE FOR ME TO ASK TWR'S PERMISSION TO MOVE L OR R FOR WAKE TURB AVOIDANCE BEFORE DOING SO.
