Narrative:
Taxi out of gate at dca. Clearance was taxiway K, taxiway P, taxiway C, hold short of runway 3 at taxiway C. Taxi was started and then a revised taxi clearance was given of taxiway J, taxiway P, taxiway C, hold short of runway 3 at taxiway C. During transition from taxiway K to taxiway J, captain turned onto taxiway M. We caught error and stopped aircraft short of runway 1. Aircraft departing runway 1 aborted takeoff. Ground asked if we were on runway 1 and we responded negative. He then cleared us onto runway 1 and then to exit at the next taxiway south of taxiway M. Not sure if abort was initiated by pilots or tower control. Commercial chart shows divider between taxiway K and taxiway J which contributed to the confusion.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR FLC FLYING AN MD80 AT DCA FAILS TO FOLLOW TAXI INSTRUCTIONS ISSUED BY GND CTL.
Narrative: TAXI OUT OF GATE AT DCA. CLRNC WAS TXWY K, TXWY P, TXWY C, HOLD SHORT OF RWY 3 AT TXWY C. TAXI WAS STARTED AND THEN A REVISED TAXI CLRNC WAS GIVEN OF TXWY J, TXWY P, TXWY C, HOLD SHORT OF RWY 3 AT TXWY C. DURING TRANSITION FROM TXWY K TO TXWY J, CAPT TURNED ONTO TXWY M. WE CAUGHT ERROR AND STOPPED ACFT SHORT OF RWY 1. ACFT DEPARTING RWY 1 ABORTED TKOF. GND ASKED IF WE WERE ON RWY 1 AND WE RESPONDED NEGATIVE. HE THEN CLRED US ONTO RWY 1 AND THEN TO EXIT AT THE NEXT TXWY S OF TXWY M. NOT SURE IF ABORT WAS INITIATED BY PLTS OR TWR CTL. COMMERCIAL CHART SHOWS DIVIDER BTWN TXWY K AND TXWY J WHICH CONTRIBUTED TO THE CONFUSION.
