Narrative:

We were on a right downwind to runway 13R. Other aircraft was apparently on a straight-in approach to same runway. Local controller advised us that he would let us know when we could turn to base. When he did say so, we did, glancing up toward the final approach track to check for traffic, but we didn't see any. As we turned onto final, the other aircraft called tower to find out why there was an aircraft in front of him, presumably us. Tower told us to immediately turn to the right to avoid conflict. As we turned, I saw the other aircraft pass under us. We both should not have trusted tower to spot conflicts and instead should have kept a wary eye out for each other.

Title: C152 HAS NMAC.

Narrative: WE WERE ON A R DOWNWIND TO RWY 13R. OTHER ACFT WAS APPARENTLY ON A STRAIGHT-IN APCH TO SAME RWY. LCL CTLR ADVISED US THAT HE WOULD LET US KNOW WHEN WE COULD TURN TO BASE. WHEN HE DID SAY SO, WE DID, GLANCING UP TOWARD THE FINAL APCH TRACK TO CHK FOR TFC, BUT WE DIDN'T SEE ANY. AS WE TURNED ONTO FINAL, THE OTHER ACFT CALLED TWR TO FIND OUT WHY THERE WAS AN ACFT IN FRONT OF HIM, PRESUMABLY US. TWR TOLD US TO IMMEDIATELY TURN TO THE R TO AVOID CONFLICT. AS WE TURNED, I SAW THE OTHER ACFT PASS UNDER US. WE BOTH SHOULD NOT HAVE TRUSTED TWR TO SPOT CONFLICTS AND INSTEAD SHOULD HAVE KEPT A WARY EYE OUT FOR EACH OTHER.
