Narrative:

M201 (pilot and CFI) was entering pattern for runway 23, following airwork. During airwork, headsets were not in use, speaker system was but volume was turned down. Entering 45 degree leg, pilot donned headset, position announcements were made on 45 degree leg, downwind, base and final. After turning on downwind, we observed a C172 (aircraft B), below and to our left, on a downwind for runway 5. We observed the C172 leave the pattern prior to reaching the normal base leg. Although the C172 and unicom heard us, the volume control position on our receiver prevented us from hearing their calls. The C172 took proper action for the situation, and I talked with a C172 crew member after landing, it was agreed to be an inadvertent occurrence.
