On approach initially to runway 21L, gear down, red unsafe light illuminated, landing green light out. Did go around, performed unsafe gear procedure -- no help. Main gear viewing periscope corroded, pitted, unable to visually confirm gear status. Declared emergency, landed runway 21R. Gear ok, maintenance pinned gear and towed us to gate.
