Narrative:

Immediately after takeoff there was an abnormal banging noise just outside the 4L exit. It was immediately reported to the cockpit via crew phone, even though it was during sterile cockpit. I placed the phone nearest to the exit, so they could hear the noise. I described it as a loud banging noise. I surmised it may be a lanyard or lavatory service compartment door that had not been latched shut before takeoff. The noise was not diminishing. The door did appear to have a good seal though. We luckily had 2 maintenance people on board, who took a look and did not know the source. The captain did make a decision to land as soon as possible and have a look. It turned out to be a heavy barrier strap that was left in the door sill by the ground crew and was shut inside the door sill and about 12-18 inches hanging out the bottom of the door and beating against the side of the airplane. No damage was done. We refueled and departed again -- no problem.
