Narrative:

We were en route from iad to ric. We were told to expect the VOR runway 20. At the last min, we were vectored for the ILS runway 16. We attempted to comply but we were too high, so went missed. The controller apologized and told us to expect the VOR runway 20. We briefed the approach again when the controller told us to turn to 210 degrees. We turned to the right. He said he wanted us to turn left. He then vectored us for another approach VOR runway 25. He never specified that he wanted us to go the long way around to 210 degrees. It was more logical to turn right and both myself and the first officer didn't hear him say left turn. Also, he had us set up for 4 approachs, thus creating a high workload for us.
