Narrative:

At 17000 ft en route from dfw to lch, flight attendant advised passenger smelled smoke. I (first officer) went to investigate. Found fire in overhead row xa. Advised captain. We declared emergency and landed at nearest suitable airport (TX06) mexia, tx. Evacuate/evacuationed aircraft on runway. No injuries. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the fire in the overhead lighting panel was caused by a shorted lamp socket. The reporter stated this aircraft has an airworthiness directive issued on the cabin lighting, but is not certain if it was accomplished on this aircraft. Reporter also noted the cabin lighting circuit breakers did not trip.

Title: A SAAB 340B IN CRUISE AT 17000 FT DECLARED AN EMER AND DIVERTED DUE TO A FIRE IN A CABIN OVERHEAD LIGHTING PANEL CAUSED BY A SHORTED LAMP SOCKET.

Narrative: AT 17000 FT ENRTE FROM DFW TO LCH, FLT ATTENDANT ADVISED PAX SMELLED SMOKE. I (FO) WENT TO INVESTIGATE. FOUND FIRE IN OVERHEAD ROW XA. ADVISED CAPT. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE FIRE IN THE OVERHEAD LIGHTING PANEL WAS CAUSED BY A SHORTED LAMP SOCKET. THE RPTR STATED THIS ACFT HAS AN AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE ISSUED ON THE CABIN LIGHTING, BUT IS NOT CERTAIN IF IT WAS ACCOMPLISHED ON THIS ACFT. RPTR ALSO NOTED THE CABIN LIGHTING CIRCUIT BREAKERS DID NOT TRIP.
