Narrative:

We were on a base entry for runway 22L squawking 1200 and were asked to identify at less than 1 mi before our turn to final. The controller told us we were #1 for landing on runway 22L, turn to final and cleared to land runway 22L. Upon turning to final, a piper cherokee also turned final from my left, right in front of our plane less than 300 ft away. We had to veer left immediately. The controller instructed the cherokee to change direction and apologized for the confusion stating something to the effect 'thank you for your cooperation, I had 3 planes end up in the same place at the same time.' in my opinion, someone should have been required to do a 360 degree turn or have gotten a vector out of the area for proper spacing in the interest of safety.
