Narrative:

Approach control vectored us to runway 24R 'visual approach' while we were north of outside the romen OM. Unknown to us, the runways 24 were not visible while the runways 25 were visible. I became fixated on the approach lights and noticed we were high for the approach so began configuring and slowing. I didn't notice the passage of the localizer needle until well PST runway 24R. About the time the flight director switched to tower frequency, the so noticed the runway confign appeared to be wrong. As he mentioned this, I checked my localizer indicator and agreed that we were heading for runway 25R, not runway 24R. The tower controller then advised us of this and said to 'switch back to runway 24R.' upon turning to intercept the runway 24R localizer course, the approach lights for runway 24R then became visible. We continued the approach and landing uneventfully. At no time did we cross into the runway 25 approach area.

Title: A B747 FLC LINED UP WITH THE WRONG RWY FOR LNDG AT LAX. THE SO DETECTED THE ERROR AND BROUGHT IT TO THE PF'S ATTN.

Narrative: APCH CTL VECTORED US TO RWY 24R 'VISUAL APCH' WHILE WE WERE N OF OUTSIDE THE ROMEN OM. UNKNOWN TO US, THE RWYS 24 WERE NOT VISIBLE WHILE THE RWYS 25 WERE VISIBLE. I BECAME FIXATED ON THE APCH LIGHTS AND NOTICED WE WERE HIGH FOR THE APCH SO BEGAN CONFIGURING AND SLOWING. I DIDN'T NOTICE THE PASSAGE OF THE LOC NEEDLE UNTIL WELL PST RWY 24R. ABOUT THE TIME THE FLT DIRECTOR SWITCHED TO TWR FREQ, THE SO NOTICED THE RWY CONFIGN APPEARED TO BE WRONG. AS HE MENTIONED THIS, I CHKED MY LOC INDICATOR AND AGREED THAT WE WERE HDG FOR RWY 25R, NOT RWY 24R. THE TWR CTLR THEN ADVISED US OF THIS AND SAID TO 'SWITCH BACK TO RWY 24R.' UPON TURNING TO INTERCEPT THE RWY 24R LOC COURSE, THE APCH LIGHTS FOR RWY 24R THEN BECAME VISIBLE. WE CONTINUED THE APCH AND LNDG UNEVENTFULLY. AT NO TIME DID WE CROSS INTO THE RWY 25 APCH AREA.
