Narrative:

On departure from thunder bay (cyqt), a left turn was initiated without direction from ATC. The flight crew believed that they were cleared to make a turn on course when able. The flight crew believed that this clearance was part of the takeoff clearance received from the control tower. The discrepancy was noted when departure told us to turn right on course and we were already in a left turn. Contributing factors to this problem were the unfamiliarity with thunder bay and the difference in terminology and procedures in canada compared to the united states. I would suggest to help with this problem that when a tower clears a plane for takeoff that they restate the initial clearance whether it be fly runway heading, turn to heading or cleared on course, etc. Also I would suggest that there be some standardization on procedures from country to country so the flight crew would not have to learn all of the nuisances of the different countries.

Title: ACR CREW CONFUSED ABOUT CLRNC, MADE WRONG TURN AFTER TKOF. TRACON DISCOVERED ERROR AND ISSUED NEW CLRNC.

Narrative: ON DEP FROM THUNDER BAY (CYQT), A L TURN WAS INITIATED WITHOUT DIRECTION FROM ATC. THE FLC BELIEVED THAT THEY WERE CLRED TO MAKE A TURN ON COURSE WHEN ABLE. THE FLC BELIEVED THAT THIS CLRNC WAS PART OF THE TKOF CLRNC RECEIVED FROM THE CTL TWR. THE DISCREPANCY WAS NOTED WHEN DEP TOLD US TO TURN R ON COURSE AND WE WERE ALREADY IN A L TURN. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS TO THIS PROB WERE THE UNFAMILIARITY WITH THUNDER BAY AND THE DIFFERENCE IN TERMINOLOGY AND PROCS IN CANADA COMPARED TO THE UNITED STATES. I WOULD SUGGEST TO HELP WITH THIS PROB THAT WHEN A TWR CLRS A PLANE FOR TKOF THAT THEY RESTATE THE INITIAL CLRNC WHETHER IT BE FLY RWY HEADING, TURN TO HEADING OR CLRED ON COURSE, ETC. ALSO I WOULD SUGGEST THAT THERE BE SOME STANDARDIZATION ON PROCS FROM COUNTRY TO COUNTRY SO THE FLC WOULD NOT HAVE TO LEARN ALL OF THE NUISANCES OF THE DIFFERENT COUNTRIES.
