Narrative:

Departed salina, ks. Cleared to 12000 ft MSL. Climbing through 11000 ft, we heard center clear a hawker jet down to 12000 ft. Center asked us to look for the hawker. We set TCASII to look up, but it did not indicate hawker until about 5 mi. We asked center if they wanted us to go back down to 11000 ft (we did this at 11700 ft). Center said that our assigned altitude was 11000 ft. We descended from 11700 ft to 11000 ft. Center told us to make telephone call to center after landing in mkc. Called center, told them our story. They listened to tape, called back and told us that center controller had cleared us to 12000 ft.
