Narrative:

Upon leaving gate at dtw, we found we had no nosewheel steering. We called maintenance, we suspected the steering relay was stuck depressed even after the towing. Pushback clamp was removed. Maintenance asked us to return to the gate. So we did. They inspected the relay plunger and freed it up. We then left dtw and the flight proceeded normally. We, however, did not make an entry in the aircraft discrepancy log. The company said that none was needed for this minor problem. We, however, learned that the entry should have been made, and the aircraft discrepancy log should have been signed off and released.
