Narrative:
Was given a heading to intercept a radial, to intercept the localizer runway 25L at a DME fix off las VOR. First officer was flying with his radios set for localizer. My radio was set for the DME fix off the VOR. At 6 DME we were instructed to turn to a heading. I looked down at my DME and it showed '6,' so I told the first officer we were there, start the turn. Shortly after the turn the controller informed us we had started our turn early. I looked down and showed 5.5 DME, but I noticed the led next to the '6' digit was blank. When I tapped on the readout, the digit illuminated and showed a '1.' we had in fact turned at '16' DME not '6.' the controller gave us another turn back. Factors contributing -- ATC had changed our route and runway, and arrival procedure 4 times in 10 mins, leaving us too rushed to program GPS as a back-up.

Title: A B727 FO MAKES TOO EARLY A TURN ONTO THE LOC WHEN THE CAPT READS AN INCORRECT 'LED' DISPLAY ON THE VOR DME.
