Narrative:

Departed pwk airport on IFR flight plan to grr. On initial climb out, ord departure cleared me to 3000 ft MSL, then further clearance to climb to 5000 ft MSL. Leveled off at 4000 ft MSL instead of 5000 ft MSL due to misreading altimeter (roll type drum) and when asked to verify altitude of 4000 ft MSL, climbed to 5000 ft MSL, controller did not advise of any ATC vertical conflict.
