Narrative:

On the night of may/xa/99 and the morning of may/xb/99, I flew over 8 hours of scheduled commercial flight time. I was scheduled to situation reserve in ind all night. At approximately PM00 on may/xa/99 I was called to go to jfk and back to ind. When I returned to ind, I traded flts with other flight engineer. He would situation reserve for the rest of the morning, and I would take his ind-den-sfo trip. At this time I wrote down the scheduled flight times to check if it would be legal. I came up with 7 hours, and some mins -- under the 8 hour limitation. After arriving in sfo, I had logged almost 9 hours of flight time. I then recalculated the block times and discovered my error. A simple mathematical error on my part had caused me to violate an far. From now on, I will doublechk my flight times -- especially if they are close to the limits, as it was in this case.

Title: A CARGO ACFT FE MAKES AN ILLEGAL TRADE WITH ANOTHER CREW MEMBER AND EXCEEDS HIS 8 IN 24 RULE AFTER DEP FROM IND, IN.

Narrative: ON THE NIGHT OF MAY/XA/99 AND THE MORNING OF MAY/XB/99, I FLEW OVER 8 HRS OF SCHEDULED COMMERCIAL FLT TIME. I WAS SCHEDULED TO SIT RESERVE IN IND ALL NIGHT. AT APPROX PM00 ON MAY/XA/99 I WAS CALLED TO GO TO JFK AND BACK TO IND. WHEN I RETURNED TO IND, I TRADED FLTS WITH OTHER FE. HE WOULD SIT RESERVE FOR THE REST OF THE MORNING, AND I WOULD TAKE HIS IND-DEN-SFO TRIP. AT THIS TIME I WROTE DOWN THE SCHEDULED FLT TIMES TO CHK IF IT WOULD BE LEGAL. I CAME UP WITH 7 HRS, AND SOME MINS -- UNDER THE 8 HR LIMITATION. AFTER ARRIVING IN SFO, I HAD LOGGED ALMOST 9 HRS OF FLT TIME. I THEN RECALCULATED THE BLOCK TIMES AND DISCOVERED MY ERROR. A SIMPLE MATHEMATICAL ERROR ON MY PART HAD CAUSED ME TO VIOLATE AN FAR. FROM NOW ON, I WILL DOUBLECHK MY FLT TIMES -- ESPECIALLY IF THEY ARE CLOSE TO THE LIMITS, AS IT WAS IN THIS CASE.
