Narrative:

We were in position and hold on runway 4L at ord. At the same time, and unknown to us, was another aircraft with similar call sign on position and hold on runway 9L at ord. After a period of about 3 mins, and while I was temporarily distraction (I sneezed), ord tower issued a takeoff clearance. Because I sneezed, I only heart part of the clearance. But I did hear 'left, cleared for takeoff, fly runway heading.' the first officer heard the whole clearance and read back the entire clearance word for word. So we turned on our landing lights and started our takeoff roll. We never heard the other aircraft respond to the takeoff clearance nor ATC say anything else till we were about 100 yards down the runway. Tower told us to stop, so we did so immediately. We then saw the other aircraft on runway 9L roll by about 200 yards in front of us. About 3 mins later we were then cleared for takeoff again from runway 4L. In retrospect, next time I will verify clearance, especially when 2 aircraft of similar call signs are on crossing runways both in position and hold.

Title: FLC OF AN ATR42 RESPONDED TO WRONG CALL SIGN AND STARTED TKOF ROLL RESULTING IN TWR CTLR STOPPING THEIR TKOF PRIOR TO THE INTERSECTING RWY ON WHICH THE OTHER ACFT WAS ALSO ON TKOF ROLL.

Narrative: WE WERE IN POS AND HOLD ON RWY 4L AT ORD. AT THE SAME TIME, AND UNKNOWN TO US, WAS ANOTHER ACFT WITH SIMILAR CALL SIGN ON POS AND HOLD ON RWY 9L AT ORD. AFTER A PERIOD OF ABOUT 3 MINS, AND WHILE I WAS TEMPORARILY DISTR (I SNEEZED), ORD TWR ISSUED A TKOF CLRNC. BECAUSE I SNEEZED, I ONLY HEART PART OF THE CLRNC. BUT I DID HEAR 'L, CLRED FOR TKOF, FLY RWY HDG.' THE FO HEARD THE WHOLE CLRNC AND READ BACK THE ENTIRE CLRNC WORD FOR WORD. SO WE TURNED ON OUR LNDG LIGHTS AND STARTED OUR TKOF ROLL. WE NEVER HEARD THE OTHER ACFT RESPOND TO THE TKOF CLRNC NOR ATC SAY ANYTHING ELSE TILL WE WERE ABOUT 100 YARDS DOWN THE RWY. TWR TOLD US TO STOP, SO WE DID SO IMMEDIATELY. WE THEN SAW THE OTHER ACFT ON RWY 9L ROLL BY ABOUT 200 YARDS IN FRONT OF US. ABOUT 3 MINS LATER WE WERE THEN CLRED FOR TKOF AGAIN FROM RWY 4L. IN RETROSPECT, NEXT TIME I WILL VERIFY CLRNC, ESPECIALLY WHEN 2 ACFT OF SIMILAR CALL SIGNS ARE ON XING RWYS BOTH IN POS AND HOLD.
