Narrative:

We departed from lyh IFR to daa, filed to csn, direct to daa and were cleared as filed to daa. Shortly after departure, center wanted us to fly direct luray. We requested direct to gve then direct to luray and center approved. Just prior to luray, center requested we fly the manne 4 arrival for daa. Since we had been cleared as filed, this came as a surprise and to add to my confusion, center did not specify the transition for the manne arrival. Hindsight clearly suggests I should have studied the specified manne 4 arrival for daa even though I had been cleared as filed. At luray my student started a right turn to 092 degrees to csn where he expected radar vectors to daa. Center called immediately and requested we continue on the manne 4 arrival, still omitting specifying the montebello transition. Still being confused, we requested radar vectors and received a radar vector of 070 degrees to which we immediately complied. Shortly thereafter, center said they were too busy for radar vectors and to intercept the 300 degree radial off armel VORTAC. At that point I finally understood what center wanted me to fly -- the montebello transition (mol.manne 4) which we did precisely.

Title: INSTRUCTOR PLT AND INST STUDENT IN A PA32 CLRED AS FILED BUT GIVEN DIFFERENT ARR PROC BY ZDC CTLR AT DEST WERE CAUGHT OFF GUARD AND BECAME CONFUSED.

Narrative: WE DEPARTED FROM LYH IFR TO DAA, FILED TO CSN, DIRECT TO DAA AND WERE CLRED AS FILED TO DAA. SHORTLY AFTER DEP, CTR WANTED US TO FLY DIRECT LURAY. WE REQUESTED DIRECT TO GVE THEN DIRECT TO LURAY AND CTR APPROVED. JUST PRIOR TO LURAY, CTR REQUESTED WE FLY THE MANNE 4 ARR FOR DAA. SINCE WE HAD BEEN CLRED AS FILED, THIS CAME AS A SURPRISE AND TO ADD TO MY CONFUSION, CTR DID NOT SPECIFY THE TRANSITION FOR THE MANNE ARR. HINDSIGHT CLRLY SUGGESTS I SHOULD HAVE STUDIED THE SPECIFIED MANNE 4 ARR FOR DAA EVEN THOUGH I HAD BEEN CLRED AS FILED. AT LURAY MY STUDENT STARTED A R TURN TO 092 DEGS TO CSN WHERE HE EXPECTED RADAR VECTORS TO DAA. CTR CALLED IMMEDIATELY AND REQUESTED WE CONTINUE ON THE MANNE 4 ARR, STILL OMITTING SPECIFYING THE MONTEBELLO TRANSITION. STILL BEING CONFUSED, WE REQUESTED RADAR VECTORS AND RECEIVED A RADAR VECTOR OF 070 DEGS TO WHICH WE IMMEDIATELY COMPLIED. SHORTLY THEREAFTER, CTR SAID THEY WERE TOO BUSY FOR RADAR VECTORS AND TO INTERCEPT THE 300 DEG RADIAL OFF ARMEL VORTAC. AT THAT POINT I FINALLY UNDERSTOOD WHAT CTR WANTED ME TO FLY -- THE MONTEBELLO TRANSITION (MOL.MANNE 4) WHICH WE DID PRECISELY.
