Narrative:

While at level cruise with ZID we were given a left turn to 270 degrees. This was 180 degrees from our present 090 degree heading. As we went into the turn we were told to 'keep it tight' and heard another aircraft asked to do a similar maneuver. When I asked the controller if we had missed something he answered, 'I thought I gave you something 10 mi ago' and that ZOB was not able to accept our handoff. As soon as we rolled out on the 270 degree heading we were given direct psb. No notice of intent to violate us.
