Narrative:

En route to sea from anc approximately 90 mi east of anc at FL290, zan advised of an altitude discrepancy of 400 ft. Descended to FL290 after realizing altimeter was set at 29.92 and first officer was still set on anc altimeter (low setting 29.60). The climb checklist was called and read passing 16800 ft. I set 29.92 and proceeded to program abeam point, in the FMC/CDU for flight following. First officer was hand flying and missed setting in 29.92. From now on, besides getting a 'verbal response' for a checklist item, I will also look for a 'physical response.'
