An md super 80 flight crew was asked to maintain heading. After crossing acn the flight crew selected a heading to go to next fix. ARTCC intervened with a heading change to the aircraft and opposite direction aircraft.

Narrative:
Over cnx abq told me to maintain heading. Heading hold selected. Got distraction and went to heading select to go to sjn. Center came back and asked if I turned and gave us and another aircraft 20 degree heading changes. We got a momentary TCASII traffic alert. ATC later cleared direct sjn. No excuse sir.
