Narrative:

I am concerned with 2 aspects of the service we received from ATC. Shortly after declaring an emergency, we were asked for souls and fuel on board. After being told to stand by, the controller asked again at least twice in short succession, and received the same reply. It would have been helpful if she could have been more patient while we dealt with more significant cockpit duties. Also, after being assigned runway 36R for landing, I was surprised to see that aircraft were still departing this runway until we were approximately 3-4 mi out. Given the serious nature of an engine out go around, I believe that the tower controller should have provided us with increased spacing. Supplemental information from acn 432382: on jen arrival at 11000 ft, left engine exceeded red line in all parameters. Captain elected to pull fire handle for precautionary shutdown. The checklists were followed and single engine landing was made without incident.
