Received ATC permission to deviate off A300, 30 NM west at 27 degrees north 73 degrees west. At 30 NM, realized more deviation was necessary. At 27 degrees north 61 degrees west, unable to obtain timely ATC clearance for further deviation. Declared exercising captain's emergency authority/authorized to deviate an additional 40 NM west. Returned to course at 28N 78W, 12 NM south of nutre on A300.
