Narrative:

As first officer on flight inbound to rlg and given holding instructions, crew determined teardrop entry was best method and FMS also followed this type entry automatically. Crew cleared to descend from FL260 to 16000 ft. About 45 seconds into teardrop entry while outbound, ATC asked us 'what is your heading? Where are you going? What are you doing?' I explained we are doing a predetermined teardrop entry. ATC instructed us to, 'turn right now, descend immediately through FL220.' autoplt was disconnected and steep bank and high descent to accomplish the maneuver by crew was accomplished. This was due to an air carrier aircraft traffic conflict to which the other flight replied they had us in sight. We had a traffic TA, but no RA, and could not see them. While returning inbound to rlg VOR holding fix, ATC controller asked us to explain again the teardrop so he knows it for future use. It appears ATC did not expect our teardrop maneuver and was anticipating a 'parallel course entry.' as a result, airspace, normally protected for holding, may have had the other aircraft too close to this 'assumed to have been protected,' airspace. Normal flight parameters were exceeded to comply with ATC instructions. Solution: have ATC controllers working this area be aware of legal options for entry determined by pilot or FMS automation. Subsequently, we were cleared for approach while approaching rlg VOR, and due to our heading, required excessive maneuvering in an attempt to try to remain in the unknown corridor of airspace between rlg and talia FAF.

Title: A B757-200 IS GIVEN AN EXPEDITED TURN AND DSCNT FOR TFC WHILE IN A TEARDROP ENTRY AT THE RLG VOR, CO.

Narrative: AS FO ON FLT INBOUND TO RLG AND GIVEN HOLDING INSTRUCTIONS, CREW DETERMINED TEARDROP ENTRY WAS BEST METHOD AND FMS ALSO FOLLOWED THIS TYPE ENTRY AUTOMATICALLY. CREW CLRED TO DSND FROM FL260 TO 16000 FT. ABOUT 45 SECONDS INTO TEARDROP ENTRY WHILE OUTBOUND, ATC ASKED US 'WHAT IS YOUR HDG? WHERE ARE YOU GOING? WHAT ARE YOU DOING?' I EXPLAINED WE ARE DOING A PREDETERMINED TEARDROP ENTRY. ATC INSTRUCTED US TO, 'TURN R NOW, DSND IMMEDIATELY THROUGH FL220.' AUTOPLT WAS DISCONNECTED AND STEEP BANK AND HIGH DSCNT TO ACCOMPLISH THE MANEUVER BY CREW WAS ACCOMPLISHED. THIS WAS DUE TO AN ACR ACFT TFC CONFLICT TO WHICH THE OTHER FLT REPLIED THEY HAD US IN SIGHT. WE HAD A TFC TA, BUT NO RA, AND COULD NOT SEE THEM. WHILE RETURNING INBOUND TO RLG VOR HOLDING FIX, ATC CTLR ASKED US TO EXPLAIN AGAIN THE TEARDROP SO HE KNOWS IT FOR FUTURE USE. IT APPEARS ATC DID NOT EXPECT OUR TEARDROP MANEUVER AND WAS ANTICIPATING A 'PARALLEL COURSE ENTRY.' AS A RESULT, AIRSPACE, NORMALLY PROTECTED FOR HOLDING, MAY HAVE HAD THE OTHER ACFT TOO CLOSE TO THIS 'ASSUMED TO HAVE BEEN PROTECTED,' AIRSPACE. NORMAL FLT PARAMETERS WERE EXCEEDED TO COMPLY WITH ATC INSTRUCTIONS. SOLUTION: HAVE ATC CTLRS WORKING THIS AREA BE AWARE OF LEGAL OPTIONS FOR ENTRY DETERMINED BY PLT OR FMS AUTOMATION. SUBSEQUENTLY, WE WERE CLRED FOR APCH WHILE APCHING RLG VOR, AND DUE TO OUR HDG, REQUIRED EXCESSIVE MANEUVERING IN AN ATTEMPT TO TRY TO REMAIN IN THE UNKNOWN CORRIDOR OF AIRSPACE BTWN RLG AND TALIA FAF.
